I’ll Take This… Beach Hut

In the UK, there is not the tradition of massive tacky beach houses like we have here in the US. Instead, there are tiny beach huts, cheek by jowl, along some beaches. These little houses, which I wrote about here, reflect the creativity of their owners.

I found this sweet little beach house for sale in Devon. It’s a new build, and it seems to have been fitted together by a boat-builder, as there is a lot in this little space.shaldon quay1 This wee house manages to have room for a seating area, shaldon quay5 a tiny kitchen, a bath with a shower and a sleeping loft.

In addition, it’s got an outdoor seating areas looking over the quay, shaldon quay6 and lots of gorgeous light.shaldon quay8 However, you do have to use a ladder to get from the terrace to the beach! But it can be yours for £200,000. Details here.

  1. I'll take my ''tacky'' beach house in Sagaponack over these beach boxes any day! Lolz!

  2. In order to have a family week (or so) at the beach, one would have to own a row of "huts". I have an inkling that the beach experience ( at least ) there would be quite different. Guess I will join Sam !

  3. P.S. What do you mean with the "tacky" Meg?

  4. Tacky? Seriously, have you seen some of the ghastly houses at the beach? It looks like someone played point-n-click with an architectural catalogue. I always look at them, and then look at some of the classic beach shingle-style beach houses, and just sigh.

  5. Dear Aunt Meggie: Dear Lord, I think you've lived in too-small row houses for too long! LOL, LOL

I looked @ the little teeny, tiny, wee house & immediately thought "claustrophobic"!!! I couldn't breath, just looking at it - can't imagine having a longterm vaca there.

I do concur with your assessment of the classic beach shingle-style houses being some of the best houses available.

  6. Being a long time resident of a desert environment, I'm not qualified to comment on beach houses. However....I thought your post was very interesting and the little house was amazing. It has everything one needs on a short term basis for clean, efficient living. When you have a great little terrace for meals and a beautiful beach for activity, two people and a dog can vacation very well there!
Thanks for sharing this unique structure.

  7. I'm with Meg on this one. Love the small little cottages - and just think - when everyone tries to invite themselves to your beach house - you explain its a hut - not a house and there is only room for me and George Clooney - and a case of wine! (Conner could come of course)

  8. I think the architect was very creative in use of space. "Charming," I thought, until I hit the part about "ladder to the beach," and realized you had to climb down a metal ladder on a stone wall. Yikes. That would wear thin fast.

  9. Oh, I understand and agree about the massive architectural "wonders". There's nothing better than the classic shingled beach houses !

  10. As always... I'm w/Meg. Yes, would be impossible with my hubby and two boys, but as a single or couple, how charming. Yes, maybe the ladder down the wall would be a little much, but I like the idea of these little spaces for weekend homes. Aren't you mostly outdoors anyway? I've thought about finding the right piece of lake front or river front land somewhere ("right" = "cheap") and buying one of those little Katrina Cottages for the home.

  11. Meg,
This is trult the posh version... last year when we were in Wales, the shore is so sadly filled with trailer parks... less messy and dirty than most in the USA but still very much an eyesore!
