No. Just NO!

Warning: I am about to be branded as a huge snob. But this is just wrong:

You don't buy a signet ring from J. Crew. It's not even engraved and they don't engrave it for you. They get all giddy about having J. Crew's name inside the ring, but not yours on the outside. Please remind me of the point of a signet ring... It's got your crest or initials on it, right? And, look at how scratched up that ring is!!!

Here's what they have to say about this ring:
It's the little details that make a difference, like the mark on the inside of this ring noting its solid-gold pedigree {that would be solid 10k gold}. The styling is a refined version of the classic signet style—we love it's bold simplicity—but it also looks impressive graced with the wearer's initials (note: J.Crew does not offer engraving).

Here's a picture of the ring I've worn for more than half my life. It's getting so worn that the monogram's nearly gone and the gold is getting very thin in the back.

  2. oh good grief, that's just one of the saddest 'fake-glamorous' things I've ever seen.

  3. I have to agree as well- since I wear my family signet ring with my family crest that was past down from my grandfather to my father to me.

  4. At least they put the J. Crew on the inside.

C'mon... mine was my father's. We picked it out and his initials are still on the face. I'm adding mine to the underside. And I hope my son will add his inside the band one day.

  5. You go girl! Life is in the small details.

For 2 days I aired my unpainted toe nails. It was horrible. I had no creativity, no energy, no magic.

In a toenail emergency I painted them yesterday. Bubble Gum Pink. Magic.

Thank you for realizing the signet ring needed a blog entry. I so get it.

  10. I'm surprised Ralph Lauren hasn't put one out with RL on it. Seriously. This thing could have come out of a gum machine.

    Thinning metal? Worn monogram? Perfection.

  11. I'm with you 100%! What were they thinking?

  12. Do I need to buy my daughter a signet ring? What finger do you wear it on? It really isn't done much where I'm from, so I'm curious about it.

  13. Mama... i wear mine on my right pinky finger. it's been on so long that it's sort of worn a groove in my finger. i think that this j. crew is big for a little girl, and maybe too masculine. look in antique shops for a vintage one.

  14. I gave one to my daughter years ago. WC too funny, but so true, something RL would likely do!
Meg no you are not a snob, just right on with this! I also liken it to people who don't need glasses wearing them to look cool!

  15. Like my husband said when he met me, good breeding is just that - good breeding. It shows. All the money in the world can't buy it.

  16. pointless !

Oh, unless your surname is actually "crew" and then its on the front as a crest!

As we would say in Australia - its a ring for "wankers"! LOL

  17. I do love a beautiful signet ring and yours is lovely...the other...well....
I got my husband one for his wedding ring and he never liked it, so I have it and got him a nice band instead. Seeing yours makes me think to go have his sized and wear it myself or save it for one of my boys.

  18. Why would someone even want "J.Crew" on the inside of their ring??? Now, if it said Tiffany's it would be a whole different story.

  19. it seems so contrived. i love your ring!!

  22. We used to have elites in this country, but now we (wrongly) turn to Hollywood to set the standards of fashion and bahavior. Should we really worship the likes of Paris Hilton and Janet Jackson? While I appreciate J.Crew's attempt at reestablishing some decorum, they totally missed the mark. Wear your signet ring with honor. And if you don't have one, as you said, go to an antiques shop to find one.

  23. Your ring is gorgeous. I love mine, still wear it, although it says Kappa Kappa Gamma and not my initials.

  24. Good God. Has it really come to this? But in a world where Ihave clients asking me to make a room that looks like "Tommy Bahama" nothing should come as a surprise. Thanks for shaking your fist!

  25. Sister-in-law called, Aunt Tillie left you a brooch.

    There in a flash. Faster,maybe?

At the first redlight, on the way home, (couldn't appear too greedy in front of sister-in-law) I inhaled the brooch with my eyes.

Inscribed on the back, Tiffany & Co.

A lot to be said for inscribing on the inside.
