UPDATED*** Madonna to Play Wallis Simpson?

Madonna is a chameleon if nothing else. She has had more looks than a kaleidoscope and has played roles from herself to Eva Peron.
Now, word is that she wants to play Wallis, Duchess of Windsor and the woman for whom Edward abdicated the throne. She identifies with Wallis who never offered an explanation - for anything. What do you think? Who should play the Duke of Windsor?

From the gossip site, Crazy Days and Nights: Madonna Is A Name Dropper - Apparently Madonna doesn't give the world the same kind of consideration she gives Queen Elizabeth before deciding to take on a film role. While all of us but the most ardent Madonna supporters would probably love for her to never act in another movie again, apparently the only person she turns to now is Queen Elizabeth. Madonna really wants to portray Wallis Simpson who was an American who got the King of England to give up his throne to marry her. Well, Madonna has actually asked the Queen for her permission to portray Simpson. Hey, Queen Elizabeth. Two words for you: Shanghai Surprise.

  1. Based on this picture, I would say, William H. Macy.

  2. I love it when you find out these things. Wasn't AL saying Wallis weighed herself in grams? Maybe Madonna is the perfect fit.

  3. Peron - yes, Wallis - don't think so. And, congratulations on the book commission!

  4. Madonna's a bit ropey to play someone like Wallis, no?

  5. Ok, that photo of Madonna is just scary. I am speechless.

  6. Well, I hate to say who NOT to play Wallis, but I think you showed us with that first picture. Bless her heart!

  7. I think Mad's should play the Duke! LOL

  8. She will make a great Wallis. And, Macy would be perfect as the Duke.

  9. Madge has none of the charm or chic that the Duchess was famous for.

  10. Well, that's disappointing.

"Shanghai Surprise" was one of the only movies I've ever walked out of and Sean Penn was in it with her.

I don't know who should play the Duke. Or who should really play the Duchess. I'll get back to you.

  11. Baltimore girl envy??? Madoona would make a perfect pug??? hehehe

  12. Oh I don't know....I think thats a bad idea -especially since I love wallis, would love to see a movie about her life and don't want Madonna to ruin it! All of her latest movies have been flops (even if I have enjoyed them). I don't think thats appropriate AT ALL. However, I can't really think of anyone else to play Wallis, can you?

  13. those arms! just goes to show you a woman of a certain age - no matter what shape or size shouldn't show her bare arms in public. hehe

I'm sure she would be great as Wallis = Hollywood makeup artists can work wonders. Actually she's probably too pretty to play her???

  14. I have never found Madonna pretty and neither was Wallis... my pick for the hid weakness the Duke??? Woody Allen...He's never made excuses either...he'd be perfect.

  15. Macy would be great as the Duke. Madonna? I don't think so. Not only isn't she the right type, physically, she's just not that good an actress.

Looking at that photo, I can totally see Cate Blanchet as Simpson.

As Edward? boy oh boy. Edward Norton?

  16. I will happily play the Duchess of Windsor so I could wear only Chanel and drape myself in Cartier jewels!! xv

  17. What a pity -- all that money and still starving...

  18. Not sure I'm seeing Madonna as Wallis although I believe they share some inner tenacity that got each of them from modest beginnings to the pinnacle they eventually occupied/now occupy.

But William H. Macy as the Duke of Edinburgh? Totally seeing that.

  19. I think Jude Law could fit this role. Meg, be sure to sign up for my Fabulous Friday Giveaway......

  20. matthew goode of match point and brideshead revisited would be perfect as the duke!

goode was so great as lynley's brother in the inspector lynley mysteries!

the amazing matthew goode here! what do you think, meg?! : )

i really think madonna would be terrific. she's made some truly awful movies...but she was excellent in evita...i can't help loving madge!...i've been a fan since i was seven years old!

  21. Ohhhh, Paul! He does adverts for Hacketts, too! Yes, please!

I am still trying to wrap my mind around Madge, though. Let's think about this some more. Someone not well-known. Kristen Scott-Thomas?

  22. Edward Fox did such a nice job last time through. That accent may be difficult for Mr. Macy.

Still, the idea of Mr. Macy playing an Englishman opposite Ms. Scott-Thomas playing an American has a certain appeal.

Isn't Madonna from New Jersey? I suppose if she can pick up an English lilt, she might manage a little further down the East Coast. I'd rather she didn't though. Cate Blanchette seems capable of playing anyone. Glenn Close? Sarah Jessica Parker? Ashley Judd? Difficult to say... .

  23. E&E... She acts like a Jersey girl, but I think she's from Michigan.

  24. She's from Michigan, and she can't act, let alone be a lady...or act like one. What really struck me as funny is her asking the Queen's permission to play Wallis. The royals LOATHED Simpson. Totally loathed her and snubbed her into death. QE blames Wallis for her own father's death, forcing him into a role he didn't have the health for.

And what's Madonna gonna do? Roll around on the Simpson grave the way she did her mothers? I don't think so.

I remember when the Duke died, and Wallis went over to Windsor for the funeral, she saw the grave site (and her spot beside him) and said "Such a tiny spot for me. Will I fit?" Apparently it was REALLY narrow.

Get Mickey Rourke to play the Duke. ;) He loves little doggies.

  25. P.S. I have GOT to change my Valentine avatar.

    P.P.S. Desperately Seeking Simpson?

  26. from the look of those muscles, whoever it is, better be able to take her on in a fight.

  27. I stumbled at that photo of Madonna, and frankly, I don't believe I will recover. What, just what, is the reason to have left behind a perfectly normal and fit figure for that? Ugh. Ick. Just... grotesque.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, will it be a younger Duke of Windsor, or an older one?
I like Jude Law and Edward Norton, or maybe that guy who stars in the TV show House.
    xo xo

  29. The three actresses who would be most qualified to play Wallis would be: Kristen Scott-Thomas, Cate Blanchett and Rachel Weisz. What a fabulous role that would be!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. If that be true, I suspect Madge is in for a short and sharp rebuff. As if HM cares either way? Really.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I can't get her ropey arms out of my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh, I would love to see the movie... but if Madge is in it I certainly wouldn't go to the theatre and probably wouldn't even get it from the rental place. Sorry, but I simply can't bear that woman. I know she has fans, just not not not me.

  33. O M G !!!!
    Almost speachless...
No wonder her Ex is supposed to have said of her - "a piece of gristle"
    just keep singing Madge.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gotta love that photo you found of Madge! Ha ha!

I'm afraid I can't take her seriously enough for a strong roll like Simpson.

    Love the topic though :-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. EEeek! That photo! How will I ever get it out of my mind if she does get the part and I see the movie?!?! Painful.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hugh Laurie for the Duke!! Perfect! I refuse to let Jude Law in.

Glenn Close is too old but has the look. This has been fun.

    Laura Linney is my choice.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Madge looks like a man, esp. with those arms. Then again, there are people who still believe that Wallis was a hermaphrodite. But, I say no, she would not make a good Wallis!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think her looks are a non-issue. Madonna should stick to singing Рacting is just not her fort̩. I have to wonder if she has ever watched any of her own movies.

    -Lana

    ReplyDelete
  39. PLEASE! Of all people NOT Madonna! She's too trashy. Wallis was at least respectable, if not more. I will never, ever watch it.

Jude Law is a wonderful idea, tho, for Edward.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Madonna's fantastic if you've seen her in A League of Their Own and even a film as trashy as Body of Evidence has moments because of her powers of persuasion (not just the T&A). I'd put it on the writer and director, not Madonna's acting, if this movie sucks.

  41. I think Paul Lynde would have been perfect....

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wallis looks EXACTLY like a brunette version of Phyllis Diller (no offense to Phyllis)....
