More Kennedy Couture

All Things Bright & Beautiful asked if I would post more of the photographs of the stunning couture dresses from the Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years book. So here are a few of my favourite selections. It is really amazing how contemporary these dresses look, even 50 years later.

This is a selection from Herbert de Givenchy. The dress is beige wool jersey with a black kid belt from the fall-winter season of 1959.

A selection from Chanel. A suit in black wool with an ivory dot-embroidered silk satin, from the fall-winter of 1956. Model number 04637.

An evening gown from Oleg Cassini. Ivory silk ziberline with jet beading. Worn at a state dinner for Jawaharlal Nehru of India, November 7, 1961.

For travel to India, a Donald Brooks dress. Empire-waisted shift in hot pink silk shantung, March 1962.

For a formal dinner, another Oleg Cassini. Azure blue silk crepe Giselle. Summer 1962.

Hope you enjoyed these!

  1. Meg, I LOVE it when you post about Miss Kenedy's wardrobe. Oleg Cassini's designs are just incredible and can definitely withstand the test of time. I would wear any of those numbers you posted! Thanks for sharing.

  2. I think I already told you this, but I saw this show in NYC about 5 years ago? something like that, maybe six. It was so beautful! You're lucky you live near the Smithsonians and can go to see all the First Lady's dresses. I would love to see those again as a grown-up.

  3. Proving once again that classic designs, well-cut and a bit understated will never look out of place. The trick is developing this kind of eye. Or having ruthless willpower and a few famous designers vying to suit you up... I hear that she wasn't above having the latest Paris couture copied by our homegrown talent....

  4. E&E... the book speaks quite frankly about her having copies made from "foreign" designers such as Chanel. You could almost take any of the clothes shown in the book and wear them today without any questions. The only things that are a bit dated are the 3/4 length sleeves on the suits.

  11. The blue silk crepe dress by Cassini is gorgeous. One of the best things JK ever put on her body.
